Happy New Year!

Wishing everyone a very happy new year!

As some of you know, here in Ecuador today is like Halloween. The kids are all dressed up and we've got our pennies and nickels rounded up so that we can circulate freely around town. We'll be leaving shortly for our annual año viejo viewings (it might still be too early but the kids are anxious) and I will be posting pictures later tonight or tomorrow. I'll also get caught up on my December Daily album later this week.

And dinner...

Hope you all have a happy and safe 2009!

P.S. Happy birthday, Dad!

What are those stuffed people for?

Amy - the stuffed people represent the "old year", which is dying. The men dress up like widows (in pretty disturbing drag, lol) and stop cars on the streets, dancing for them and then collecting money. Usually the "old years" represent some political character (or athlete or musician) that has been in the news a lot over the year. People put up commentary about these people and display them for the rest of the city (this year there were a lot of Bushes dodging flying shoes). The little kids tend to gravitate towards the cartoon characters, however, which obviously have no political connection! It is hard to explain - you'll have to make a trip down one year and experience it for yourself! :)
